Project focus
In order to improve insight in the Jewish inhabitants of Drenthe during the Second World War and their mutual family relations we elaborated the project focus as follows.
Focus on the province of Drenthe
In doing so for the first time an as complete as possible picture is given of the Jewish population in the province of Drenthe during WO-II. When focussing on the inhabitants of the whole province of Drenthe we linked as key item to the last known living address in the towns in Drenthe during the war period. That fact is in particular known in the database of the Joods Monument.
Jewish inhabitants
Oorlogsslachtoffers
We consider Jews, who died due to violence in the period 1940 -1945 as war victim.
That definition thus does not only include Jews, who were murdered in a concentration/extermination camp, but also all those cases, in which somebody was not killed in a camp, but definitely due to the sjoa (for instance executed, suicide, or another reason).
Period of the Seconf World War
As beginning of the Second World War we follow all deportatieon lists, at our disposal via the NIOD, the so called "mayors lists" of the municipalities of Drenthe that were produced early summer 1942 as preparation for the deportations. Although those figures concern a snapshot, we preferred these as best indication due to those exact numbers and because there are no other sources available for the total period with hard figures. Our figures come at 1,444 Jewish inhabitants of Drenthe, of whom 1,237 became war victim and 205 survivors (see the sub-page <Numbers of Jewish person> for a more extensive explanation).
Mutual family relations
By combining all persons data in one main database it is possible to make the mutual family relations visible. In addition to the large main database MISJPOGE-DRENTHE there is still another smaller database COHEN, that is not combined, because of different field structure and/or other ways of writing names. That should, however, remain very limited since we aim at one central main database.
As regards the war victims the insight in family relations is in particular possible in the form of an Ancestor Report, since with them generally a Descendant Report is not possible anymore due to the lack of descendants after the holocaust. With survivors there are both ancestors and descendants as well, enabling there also the presentation in a Descendants Report. Thos presentation forms are generated online for a selected person and that is both possible in various textual and graphical presentation forms as well.
As the database grows of course also the family relations will have the tendency of further branching in The Netherlands also outside of the province of Drenthe or even abroad in cases of emigration.
For the various presentation options we refer to the sub-menu page Explanation use of HuMo-gen with a more detailed explanation on the application possibilities and the buttons of HuMo-gen.
